WhoSliders #20 – ROSE’S SLIDERS: FIRST SLIDE

Spread the love

This is the crossover fanfic in my fan-series featuring Rose from Doctor Who (the new BBC tv series) – and a new Sliders team.

Story (C) 2007-2015 Mr SciRev.

For the Dr Who Timeline Related to this Fanfic, or to read what happened just before this fanfic, please see WhoSliders 19. It occurs Post-Doomsday, probably contemporary to Smith and Jones.

What you need to know:
The Doctor is a Time Lord – a time-traveller from the alien world called Gallifrey [Universe-777, the Stargate Universe] who travels in space and time thanks to his TARDIS which looks like a police box, bigger inside than outside. When the Doctor is severely injured or even killed, he will regenerate into a new appearance and body. He is currently in his tenth incarnation (9th regeneration). He is the survivor of the Time War which saw his homeworld Gallifrey destroyed completely.

The Sliders (the original ones), after having managed to travel back to Earth-001, have kept experimenting with dimensional travel. Years have passed since the Sliders returned. They are no longer able to slide and have lost contact with the Doctor.”

After the alien Wibbles had been picked up by this world’s torchwood, Rose stood on top of the Torchwood tower and sighed deeply.

She thought of the Doctor and how lonely he must be feeling now. She decided to go back inside the building where Conn and Arthur, the Professor, had been working on their final simulations for the first test of their new sliding device. The device would make interdimensional travel possible again. It was being powered by none less than a naquadha generator, an alien power device. The simulations were supposed to show that the world would be safe this time.

Previous attempts at sliding had been less than successful since the Doctor had closed the multiverse breach, and any opened wormholes ended up being “censored topologically”.. in other words they just closed up and were plainly useless. Standard paths between universes were now closed.

The Torchwood team’s work was aimed at opening a stable wormhole, or something which worked like one but which would not get closed down. One which would not end up destroying the world though, with her mum and boyfriend on it.

Time passed, and the simulations were run. Conn and Arthur discovered unfortunately that while their sliding device would work, doing the first trip on earth would be fatal to the earth’s core. The latter would be pulled towards the device, resulting in a huge disaster for the whole planet. Conn got somewhat angry at this latest result, and slammed the laptop computer which they had been working on.
“It’s not the laptop’s fault, you know” Arthur looked towards him. “We need a break”

The team decided to spend an hour or so of watching The Simpsons on a television. This particular episode which was being broadcast featured a few “esteemed representatives of television“, one of which was a man with a mess of curly hair and a long scarf you would easily trip on.

Rose thought he seemed familiar but she could not remember who he might be at first. Then she recognised him – yes it must have been him! The Doctor, but different and not “her Doctor”.

This gave her hope that a parallel version of the Doctor might even exist on this world, but she was making plans to leave it soon. After all, it was only “her Doctor” which counted for her.

Conn and Arthur soon returned to their work. They found a solution to making the interdimensional travel safe… just go to a neutron star or black hole known as E1! This was the youngest neutron star or black hole known in the universe. A supernova had exploded, collapsing cataclysmically becoming E1. It was 10,000 light years away from earth, so the problem was getting there.

Torchwood had no spacecraft and due to the vast distance they needed a spacecraft which could travel faster than light or it would have taken more than their lifetime to get there.

Liz thought of her school friend Max. Max was, well, not really human. He was an alien living among humans. He had access to what he called the “Granolith”. This was no ordinary machine. It was hidden in a cave in Roswell. It could send them to a faraway planet. Liz decided to phone up Max, to see if he could help.
“Hi Max, how are you? Listen, I need to ask you for a favour…”

The problem was that the trip would be one-way. The destiny book tells that the granolith only has one mission, to take the royal four (Max and the other 3 from Roswell) back to their planet, so it could only be used once. Borrowing it would leave the royal four stranded!

If Rose’s team borrowed it, they would have no way of getting back to earth, so the Granolith, a black cone-shaped spacecraft in Roswell, was a no-go. Liz didn’t even tell the other members, fearing they would like to get their hands on the technology anyway.

Rose was sitting in the big chair in her office. She flicked through a file and found an entry on the Stargate.
This was a huge ring like device which allowed instantaneous travel to other worlds. It had been built by a race called the Ancients. The Doctor had said there was a connection with Gallifrey too.
That would be the solution they had been looking for. She read that currently Stargate Central was located in Cheyenne Mountain (as in Earth-777) and it was being headed by Elizabeth Weir.
“Met her 777 alternate once.. I’ll give her a call!”

Soon it had been arranged. The Torchwood team would be given GDO’s, or garage door openers, devices to signal that they were allowed to pass through the Stargate. Otherwise upon their return, they would be splattered against a defense shield.
All the equipment had been lugged with them and they prepared to gate to a nearby planetary system. The planet, P10X-920 as Stargate Central had called it, was uninhabited at present. It was sufficient for the team to slide from there as it was close enough to E1.

Mickey – Rose’s boyfriend – wasn’t too happy about this arrangement. He was worried sick that something might happen to Rose, she might get stranded on this planet or a parallel earth. But what could he do? He wasn’t on the team. He didn’t have a sliding device he might use to follow her. So he kept on insisting to be present when they went through the Stargate. And Rose ended up accepting.
Going through the Stargate felt… funny.. to most of the team. It was a first experience for them as their molecules disassembled and reassembled on the other side – the planet P10X-920. They took measurements which indicated that E1 was a very unusual neutron star with a pulsar rate which was very non-standard. They did some calibrations to their model to account for this and Conn held the special remote control in his hand, pointing it in front of them. SG-2 which had accompanied them prepared to return.

Suddenly Rose and the others realised that someone had followed them. It was Mickey, who had jumped through the wormhole even though he was not supposed to be there. Rose was angry. She did not like this at all. Now she would have to worry for his safety too.
They could now leave the main sliding device with the naquadha generator here – Stargate Command actually decided to set up a temporary base to be sure the device would be protected – and then once on earth they could just slide using the remote device which was actually added inside Rose’s smartphone, back on earth. All of them had a GDO for their earth’s Stargate, except for Mickey, of course.

Rose ran the Sliding app on her smartphone which controlled the device, and a stable wormhole opened and stayed open for enough seconds to be able to tell it was not going to close soon. “Now”, she said, “let’s hope we get to find a stargate on the parallel universe we end up in!”, as she jumped through the wormhole, followed by the others – Mickey included.

P10X-920-494, 2007

A huge wormhole appeared and out of it a figure fell…
Rose landed on the ground followed by the others. She looked around. The area was.. different… There was a lot more greenery than before. The stargate was here, thankfully. They only had to gate to Earth now. They hoped the GDO codes would be compatible. Liz entered the code sequence for Earth and they passed through the stargate.cheyenne mountain
As soon as they appeared on the other side, they saw a number of soldiers – armed soldiers – pointing their weapons straight at them. A red alert began to ring throughout the building in Cheyenne Mountain…

Suddenly a tall man with an eyepatch wearing black entered the room. His hair was short, looked stern and had a tattoo on his forehead. Rose immediately thought “Nick Fury?”

He spoke to the Torchwood team.

My name is General Teal’c. Who are you? Which world are you from? How did you have our GDO signals?” (all except one of course)
We are a team called WHOSliders. We are from Earth-776, a parallel earth to yours. We come in peace” Rose answered. Her pose made it clear she was leading the team. Her thoughts went to Earth-777 though.
Was this Teal’c friendly, or had this installation been taken over by the Goa’uld of this universe?
