The new baddie in the Avengers movie is..

What do we know about the bad guys in the upcoming Avengers movie in production..

The main bad guys are Loki (as seen in the Thor movie – since he gets hold of the Cosmic Cube at the end of that movie), and of course the green-skinned reptilian alien Skrulls.

But there’s yet another big villain to come in this movie!

SPOILERS as River Song would say..

Shia LaBeouf to Quit Transformers Movie Franchise.. Reboot?

News has come out that the actor Shia LaBeouf from the Transformers Movie Franchise is quitting the franchise, together with Director Michael Bay, after the third movie.
He mentioned the possibility of a reboot.

This was discussed on MTV. Meanwhile in the latest sequel to 2009’s Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, the Autobots are back. Lead by Optimus Prime, the Autobots face the Decepticons once more, during a dangerous US-Russia space race. Once more Sam Witwicky has to help his robot friends.

LaBeouf said “I’m not coming back to do another one”, giving rise to the possiblity of either a new actor replacing him or a full reboot for the fourth movie (which Paramount is interested in).

Review: Doctor Who – Mara Tales (Kinda)

Here’s a review of the classic Doctor Who series episode Kinda which has been released as part of the Mara Tales Box set.

The episode, my favourite classic episode, has recently been released on DVD. The picture quality is superb, having been digitally restored. There are even new CGI effects which can be chosen if one prefers. The story was well known for its not so good rubber snake… 🙂

The recent James Cameron movie Avatar was influenced very much by this story, even though Avatar was too pessimistic and anti-human, while Kinda is pro-human and a much more positive story.

It’s worth watching indeed. The enemy is the evil entity, coming from the collective unconscious, known as the Mara. I wrote my first fanfic from which the WhoSliders series emerged as a sequel to the Mara stories in Doctor Who, so it’s worth viewing if you read my fics. It takes a spiritual and anthropological approach to sci-fi pioneered by Ursula K. Le Guin.
Humans from earth are about to colonise planet S14, known to the locals as Deva Loka (the location is revisited in my fics too and Hindle becomes a WhoSlider). And the ancient evil known as the Mara emerges in the subconscious of the Doctor’s companion Tegan (played by the wonderful Janet Fielding). Nyssa is kept out of the story as she is recuperating.

The episode features Peter Davison as the 5th Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan, Matthew Waterhouse as Adric, Nerys Hughes as Todd, Simon Rouse as Hindle and Adrian Mills as Aris. It was directed by Peter Grimwade and written by Christopher Bailey. It is really worth getting on DVD and viewing. You can get from the following Amazon uk link..

The Maltese Hobbit

A number of years ago I had dreamt of the idea of translating Tolkien’s writings (or The Hobbit at least) into the Maltese language..

Nothing came of it though I had some ideas and a proposal but the Tolkien estate wanted lots of money for translating it 🙁

I decided to write down some of my thoughts after reading this article on bigthink.
Since the Maltese word elf means a thousand, I thought of using elvu instead for the elf race. For Thorin Tarkatalballut (Thorin Oakenshield)’s people, I used nanu.

From the Ashes of SGU

While Stargate Universe is totally cancelled, something is rising from its ashes. Mark Savela, who was the Visual effects supervisor of Stargate Universe (SGU), together with production assistant Ken Kabatoff, are now pitching their new post-apocalyptic show with 80% of SGU’s cast and crew. (Won’t that look odd.. hmmm. it might work!)

The assembled team includes SGU actors Jen Spence & Mike Dopud, director of photography Michael Blundell, production designer James Robbins, director Will Waring, as well as composer Joel Goldsmith.
This weekend they are gathering in Vancouver to film the pilot.

The show’s working title is “Echoes”. The story is about two alien superpowers blowing each other up on earth and leaving most humans dead… how will mankind survive this? That’s what the show asks.

Rather than aliens invading or attacking earth, this futuristic story focuses on aliens vs aliens, while man tries to just stay alive. Savela says “It’s kind of like two superpowers fighting in Australia, and destroying the Australians.”

The show is going to be dark and gritty and full of action, Kabatoff said. The producers are inspired by non-sci fi shows such as “The Pacific” and “Band of Brothers”.

The lead is played by Spense (Dr Lisa Park on SGU) who leads a band of survivors in the US, two years after the destructive alien war on earth. She will develop into a Sarah-Connor type character.
Hope the pilot makes it. Sounds like a good story.
Perhaps it could be better if the humans end up on one or both of the two alien worlds. That would really be interesting!
